The house on rock and sand

Gospel (Mt 7,21-29) - At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: «Not everyone who says to me: 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day: "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name?" But I will declare to them: I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of iniquity. Therefore whoever hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers overflowed, the winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall, because it was founded on the rock. Whoever hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, the rivers overflowed, the winds blew and beat on that house, and it fell, and its ruin was great." When Jesus had finished these speeches, the crowds were amazed at his teaching: in fact he taught them as one who has authority and not as their scribes.

The commentary on the Gospel by Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia

This word from the Gospel helps us understand where the stability of life is. And in this time marked by so much instability, in which we realize how precarious our existence and the life of the world is, these words call us to build our house on the rock. Not just for us, but for the many people who don't know where to go. We are in wartime, with all the consequences; as Jesus says, it is the time of rain, of overflowing rivers, in which the winds blow: like a great storm and a flood that wants to submerge everything. But “the Lord is a refuge and strength for us” – says Psalm 45 – “always a help in times of trouble. Therefore let us not fear if the earth trembles, if the mountains fall to the bottom of the sea." In difficult times the temptation to be alone and to think about oneself is strong, but this proves to be the great deception, because in times of storm it is the "sand" that causes the house to collapse. As Cardinal Martini wrote: «We must not forget the adversary who, through tiredness, boredom and frustration, comes to weaken our life. There you need to resist forcefully, resist, resist, resist! The most solid rock is the one found in the depths that must be sought through reading the Bible. Jesus says that he who does the Father's will will enter the kingdom, and the Father's will is not to lose any of his children, and that everyone can now have a place and a home, and that we prepare them for those who are left Alone.
